West Side Story (music: Leonard Bernstein, lyrics: Stephen Sondheim, book: Arthur Laurents) was inspired by Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. In this
update, the story is set in the Upper West Side of New York City
in the mid-1950s. The musical explores the
rivalry between the Jets and the Sharks, two teen street gangs of different
ethnic backgrounds. The members of the Sharks, from Puerto Rico, are taunted by
the Jets, a white gang. Of course, there is an inter-gang romance involved. Considered a turning point in
American musical theater, the original 1957 Broadway
production ran for 732 performances and was nominated for 6 Tony Awards. In 1961 West
Side Story was made into a movie starring Natalie Wood and Rita
Moreno, winning 10 of its 11 Academy Awards nominations. Our August 2nd performance will begin with another fabulous GTMS appetizers and adult beverages reception -- always with a few surprises. So come out for a night of song and dance while helping to support Gadsby's Tavern Museum. Leather jackets and poodle skirts optional!
