DRAFT #2

George Washington Supported Gadsby's Tavern
He Is Doing It Again
& You Can, Too - Virtually

In the 18th century George Washington frequented Gadsby's Tavern for meals with friends, conversations with colleagues, and special events such as his Birthnight Balls.  In this century he will once again be providing support to Gadsby's. More precisely, an antique ivory miniature portrait of President Washington will be auctioned to provide funding for the Museum's Endowment Campaign.  A very generous donor, Mr. Thomas Seligman, Curator Emeritus of the
Cantor Arts Center at Stanford University has given GTMS the tiny (3"x4") family heirloom to help us maintain the Museum into the next century. This early-19th century miniature will be auctioned by the Potomack Company in their November 18-19 Historical Sale.

To celebrate the Seligman donation, GTMS will hold a Virtual Wine & Cheese Reception a few days before the auction. "Attendees" will have the opportunity to
  • HELP George Washington to support Gadsby's Tavern this century by making a $40 tax-deductible donation to the initial stages of the Endowment Campaign
  • LEARN about this miniature portrait and about the importance of such miniatures in the days before photography from a Potomack Company expert.
  • ENJOY wine, cheese, and other savory treats (enough for 2-3 people) selected by Cheesetique's Cheese Lady, Jill Erber, who will also tell you the history behind the selection and how they relate to George Washington.
  • See a recently updated overview of Gadsby's Tavern Museum and the Tavern's place in historic Alexandria from Liz Williams, Director of the Museum
