Remember the First Ladies is a groundbreaking book showing the evolutionary role of first lady and its historic importance on the American presidency. The book shines a light on the influential women who broke barriers and made a mark on our country and, at times, our world, during their tenures in the White House.

More about the Speaker and the Book

Co-author Nancy Kegan Smith, a former president of GTMS, retired in 2012 as Director of the Presidential Materials Division of the National Archives and Records Administration.

East Wing Magazine noted that the “book enlightens readers about the evolutionary role of the first lady and its historic importance.” More than a group biography, the book has been referred to as an analysis of how these women affected the evolution of the role of first lady and what they substantively did.

An Alexandria Times article entitled ‘Authors: There Is Still So Much Unknown About First Ladies’ tells more of the story behind the co-authors’ Remember the First Ladies: The Legacies of America’s History-Making Women and their previous joint effort developing a textbook for a college level course. The textbook, U.S. First Ladies Making History and Leaving Legacies, included a Forward by Dr. Jill Biden.

Cognella, the publisher of both books, offers more in-depth descriptions of Remember the Fist Ladies and the textbook U.S. First Ladies Making History and Leaving Legacies

Guests may also participate in a raffle of First Ladies’ inspired pearl jewelry, including an Ann Hand eagle brooch.

Proceeds from this event will benefit the Gadsby’s Tavern Museum Society. If you are unable to attend, but still want to support Alexandria's historic gem which has been visited by at least 3 First Ladies, your donation will be greatly appreciated.
